I am totally ignorant about chess engines and how they work. But I do play internet chess using a program called Winboard (WinBoard-4.8.0\WinBoard\winboard.exe). It comes pre-loaded with various chess engines. I added Stockfish to the list of available programs. When I want to play, the engine gets loaded, but it won't make any moves. I don't know anything about UCI, IOS, popcnt, bmi, or whatever. How do I get Stockfish to actually work with Winboard on a Windows 10 PC?

Stockfish is a engine that uses the protocol UCI. In Winboard you only can load engines that use the protocol xboard, so that you cannot load Stockfish directly. For doing it, you need Polyglot, a program that translates between xboard and UCI chess engines.

Thank you for that response. So, to demonstrate how completely ignorant I am on these things, now that I have installed Stockfish, how do I make it run using UCI? (I'll worry about xboard later.)

Hello, Joe, the easiest thing is installing Arena, a free chess interface, from With Arena already installed, go to the menu Engines, option Install New Engine, search the folder where you downloaded the Stockfish executable and open the executable. Arena will ask you if you want start the engine; click on button Yes. If you has succeeded, Stockfish will be installed.

Thank you, so much, JCMH! That seems to have done the trick. Stockfish is loaded on Arena now and playing.

You're welcome. The good thing is that Arena supports both xboard and UCI.
